“Ottawa Safe Drivers Driving School offers a MTO-approved BDE (Driver’s Ed) self-study course.”

About the BDE course

The Beginner Driver Education (BDE) course offers a comprehensive program designed to help new drivers develop essential road skills. The course includes both theory-based e-learning and one-on-one in-car training sessions, led by instructors who undergo annual re-certification at both provincial and municipal levels.

The theory portion of the course is NOT specifically designed to help students pass the G1 knowledge test. Instead, it aims to provide a broader understanding of driving principles, road safety, and vehicle operation.

Important: Students must complete both the theory and in-car sessions within a year of starting the course.

G1 License: Though a G1 license is not required for the theory portion, it is mandatory for in-car training. Students can register for the course up to three months before turning 16.

Course duration: A complete BDE course requires at least nine days to complete, including at least four days for the theory component and five days for the in-vehicle training, a 2-hour session daily.  It will depend on the students’ and school’s availability, the theory part, and the in-vehicle components must be completed within a year.

Scheduling In-Car Sessions: The MTO requires BDE students to complete the theory part of the course before scheduling their in-car lessons. Please plan your in-car lessons at least two weeks in advance. Email us your pick-up address and availability, and we will connect you with your in-car instructor to arrange your lessons. Students are responsible for coordinating their in-car training sessions directly with their instructor. Note that no in-car sessions will be available after the course expiration date.

Proof of course completion: After successful course completion, students can visit Service Ontario in person to obtain their Driver’s License History (DLH), BDE graduates with a DLH are eligible for an insurance discount.
