New drivers applying for their first car or motorcycle license in Ontario must go through the graduated licensing system. To apply, you must be at least 16 years old, pass a vision test, and demonstrate your knowledge of road rules and traffic signs by passing a written test. Once these requirements are met, you will enter Level One and receive a Class G1 license. Level One lasts 12 months, but by successfully completing an approved Beginner Driver Education (BDE) course, you can reduce this period to eight months. It’s recommended to begin your training as soon as you become a Level One driver to gain valuable driving experience. To become fully licensed, you must pass two road tests. The first test advances you to Level Two (Class G2), and the second grants you full Class G driving privileges. This graduated system ensures that new drivers gain experience and develop their skills progressively, requiring at least 20 months to complete both licensing stages.
