Starting your driving journey is an exciting step. The graduated licensing system in Ontario is designed to help new drivers safely build their skills through three progressive stages.
G1 Licence – Learn the Rules
Applicants begin by applying at a DriveTest Centre, where they must pass a vision test and a written knowledge test covering traffic laws and road signs. This stage typically lasts 12 months. However, students who complete a Beginner Driver Education (BDE) course can reduce this waiting period to 8 months.
G2 Licence – Build Driving Experience
After passing the first road test, drivers move to the G2 stage, allowing them to drive independently while gaining valuable real-world experience. This stage lasts 12 months before drivers can take the final road test for their full licence.
Overall, the graduated licensing system ensures new drivers gain at least 20 months of driving experience before earning full driving privileges, helping them develop safe and responsible driving habits.
